Tony Hale, star of legendary sitcoms, touts move to Birmingham: ‘Constantly surprises me’

Tony Hale, an Emmy-winning actor, isn’t shy about singing the praises of his new hometown in Alabama.

Hale, famed for his work in the TV series “Veep” and “Arrested Development,” has been in the spotlight recently, promoting his new movie, “Sketch.”

During an interview with Southern Living, Hale, 54, talked about moving to Birmingham in 2024 with his wife, makeup artist Martel Thompson. Their daughter, Loy Ann Hale, left the nest to go to college at Wake Forest University in North Carolina, and her parents, both of whom have strong ties to Alabama, decided it was time to return to the South.

“Birmingham is the perfect pace for us,” Hale told Southern Living. He offered kudos, for example, to the city’s Sidewalk Film Festival, calling it “just so cool and charming.”

“Birmingham just constantly surprises me,” Hale said.

Hale gave a thumbs-up to several restaurants in Birmingham — Helen, Little Betty, El Royale Cafe and Current Charcoal Grill — and said he was rediscovering Southern barbecue joints, including restaurants in Alabama.

“Good barbecue feels like a big hug,” Hale told Southern Living. “Especially when you’ve got the greens and the cornbread. Every box is checked.”

Hale’s love for the Magic City runs deep. The actor, who was born in New York, spent his teen years in Tallahassee, Florida, and came to Birmingham as a college student. Hale graduated from Samford University in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and has maintained an enduring connection to the school.

Just as important, Hale’s wife is from Anniston, about 64 miles east of Birmingham, and she still has family there. Although Hale and Thompson have lived in cities such as New York and Los Angeles, they often returned to Alabama to visit friends and loved ones.

In fact, Hale was spending time in Alabama when he learned about his 2014 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, for his role in “Veep.” (Hale didn’t win that year, but he earned two Emmys for his work in the HBO comedy series, in 2013 and 2015.)

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hale said the news of his 2014 Emmy nod reached him during a family trip to Alabama.

“It was really fun, because I’m surrounded by family and they all got excited for me,” Hale told EW. “I have an Emmy nomination, and I’m surrounded by fried food. So that’s a good day.”

When asked to elaborate on his favorite fried foods, Hale responded this way: “Well, of course fried okra is involved, and grits. We had fried chicken last night and homemade creamed corn. That was delicious. Plus, my sister-in-law made a fantastic peach cobbler. It’s all about the food when you come down South.”

More recently, Hale has been doing interviews and making promotional appearances for “Sketch,” a fantasy/comedy movie released on Wednesday, Aug. 6. In the film, Hale portrays a single dad who’s coping with an unusual crisis: His daughter’s scary drawings have come to life, creating chaos for the family and an entire town.

On his Facebook page, Hale touted a special screening of the film on Thursday, Aug. 7, at the AMC Patton Creek 15 movie theater in Hoover. The event was a fundraiser for Birmingham’s Lovelady Center, a nonprofit organization that provides services for women who’ve been released from prison.

“If anyone happens to be in Birmingham, Alabama on August 7th, we’re having a special screening of my movie ‘Sketch’ with a Q&A after with myself and our director, Seth Worley,” Hale said in a Facebook post. “And all the ticket sales will go to support The Lovelady Center! It’s going to be a great night supporting a great cause.”
